Profile of the artist

Borge Mogensen

Born on 13 April 1914 in Aalborg, Denmark

Borge Mogensen began his career as a cabinetmaker, then studied furniture design at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen until 1938, under the direction of Kaare Klint, where he later became assistant between 1938 and 1941. At the same time he entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1942. He then worked for various studios and became head of the FDB design workshop. In 1959, he left his post, founded his own studio and created various furniture ranges for Soborg Mobelfabrik, Frederica Stolefabrik and Karl Andersson and Soner. His works were very successful and were exhibited in Zurich, New York, Paris, London etc. He received numerous awards, including the Eckersberf Medal in 1950. Mogensen is one of the great masters of the Danish modernist movement.

Mogensen’s design is characterized by a human and functionalist approach, we speak about his democratic design. He designed furniture with a stripped-down aesthetic, using mainly wood, canning and leather, and made pieces that he tested himself, aided by his children, by trampling them.

Originally published by FDB Mobler, it was subsequently edited by Fredericia, whom Mogensen joined in 1955 as head of design.
